Total Balance Mens Plus Comparison

Total Balance 'Men's Plus' Version

LifePak 'NANO' version

Quick Facts

This comparison includes a month's supply of Xtend-Life’s Omega 3 DHA Fish Oil to better compare with 'LifePak Nano' which includes some Omega 3 Fish Oils. ‘Nano’ is somewhat of a misnomer as the ‘Nano’ technology has only been applied to a couple of the ingredients. The general 'LifePak' tablets have nothing special, but rather they have added a small amount of some of the essential ingredients missing in the other LifePak versions.

The monthly cost of LifePak Nano is approx 65% more than the full dose of Total Balance Men’s (standard version) (2 bottles) plus 1 bottle of Xtend-Life Omega 3 DHA/Esters based on published retail prices, not taking into account loyalty program discounts or any discounts that LifePak may offer, and ignoring the extra cost to ‘upgrade’ LifePak as referred to in ‘Value for Money’ below.

1. Total Balance Men's  has almost double the quantity of nutrients than LifePak Nano.

2. If the Vitamin C, Calcium and Magnesium are excluded Total Balance Men's has over three times the quantity of nutrients. (see the FAQ's section below for a discussion about the inclusion of vitamin C, Calcium and Magnesium in health supplements).

3. LifePak Nano has a total of 45 ingredients compared with 86 ingredients in Total Balance Mens.

4. Total Balance Mens has specific ingredients to target the health of the prostate.

Total Balance Men's is Enteric Coated which enables the release of all the active ingredients in the upper intestine instead of the stomach. All ingredients are therefore protected against degradation by stomach acids. LifePak Nano does not have this pharmaceutical grade delivery system.

LifePak Nano is missing many of the highly active and beneficial ingredients present in Total Balance Men's. It would be expensive for LifePak users to add these missing ingredients to their supplement regime!

For example, to purchase just 5 of the missing 41 ingredientsL-Glutathione, L-Carnosine, Beta-Glucan, Tumeric, Zeaxanthin and Policosanol and to ‘top up’ the Reservatrol and Zeaxanthinit would add approximately another $84.00 to the monthly cost of LifePak Nano.

This table shows the ingredients and amounts in a full daily dose of Total Balance Men's  and its closest LifePak equivalent (Nano). Because Pharmanex has chosen to incorporate their Omega 3 into Their 'Nano' formula, it is necessary to include Xtend Life's 'Omega 3 DHA Fish Oil' product in this comparison so that we are comparing apples with apples.

1. All minerals for Total Balance Mens Plus are listed as elementals. An assumption has been made that all minerals listed for LifePak are also elemental, but this is uncertain.

2. Total Balance Mens Plus does not include Vanadium as there is evidence which suggests that this substance can be toxic in the presence of Chromium or Iodine.

3. The Men's version of Total Balance contains extra Zinc from aspartate which follows a metabolic pathway to the prostate.

4. Total Balance does not include Silicon as it could possibly cause metabolism problems with other nutrients present in these formulas. Adequate amounts are normally present in the diet.

1. Amino acids are crucial to good health and few people obtain sufficient from diet alone. Modest supplementation of these important nutrients is essential.

2. L-Glutathione is one of the most important nutrients in the body. It is rarely used in supplements because it is very expensive (80 times more expensive than Vitamin C) and also because it needs to be released in the upper intestine, which can only be achieved by enteric coating the tablet.

3. L-Tyrosine is an important precursor for the manufacture within the body of CoQ10 when combined with other co-factors in Total Balance.

1. Total Balance Mens Plus contains a significant number of very potent immune enhancing nutrients such as Beta Glucan, Polysaccarides, Resveratrol and others which are not found in LifePak Nano.

2. It should be noted that not all carotenoids are 'equal'. Some are much more potent than others which reflects in their cost. For example, Zeaxanthin costs more than 20 times as much as Lutein.

3. This version of Total Balance contains Beta Sitosterol, Corn Silk extract and extra Lycopene for the benefit of the prostate.

4. Total Balance Mens Plus also contains Chrysin to help prevent the conversion of testosterone to estrogen.

(DHA) (500mgs) (400mgs)
(EPA) (220mgs) (600mgs)
krill Oil NIL 100mgs

1. The key Omega 3 for brain and cardiovascular health is DHA. It is more easily converted to EPA in the body rather than the other way around. This is because DHA has 22 carbon bonds against 20 carbon bonds in EPA. When it 'drops' 2 carbon bonds it becomes EPA.

2. The Xtend-Life Omega 3 is a molecularly distilled product for maximum purity. 44% of the fish oil content is Omega 3 versus only 30% for the LifePak Nano product.

3. LIfePak's fish oils come from unknown sources although the krill comes from Antarctica. Concerns are being raised about the harvesting of krill due to it potential impact on the ecological systems, particularly the whales who rely on krill as their food source. All oil in Xtend-Life's product is sourced from a sustainable fishery managed by the New Zealand government.

Q. Why separate out the Vitamin C, Calcium and Magnesium?

A. Most calcium deficiencies are not due so much to lack of calcium intake but rather through loss of calcium being leached from the bones. Total Balance has been designed to help prevent that loss. Calcium and magnesium is very cheap (in some cases 1/80th - 1/100th the cost of some ingredients in Total Balance).

Sufficient amounts of these minerals have been included to meet most peoples needs. Separate supplementation for these minerals is recommended only if a need has been demonstrated. The cost for additional 'top up' supplementation for these three nutrients would range between $1.80 for Vitamin C and around $2.50 per month for Calcium/Magnesium combination.

Q. What are the 'elementals' referred to in the mineral section?

A. This is an area of confusion with many people. You cannot have the actual mineral on its own in the supplement. It must be in another form to ensure it can be absorbed by the body. For example, calcium citrate only has around 24% of calcium present. The elementals is the actual amount of the mineral provided in the supplement. Most companies however only list the gross amount of the material used.

Q. What is enteric coating?

A. Learn about enteric coating by following this link. In brief it protects the ingredients as they pass through the stomach and releases them in the upper intestine where most nutrients in the body are then transported into the blood stream.

Q. What ingredients are protected by enteric coating the tablets?

A. There are a number, but the most important ones are L-Glutathione, Resveratrol and L-Carnosine.

Q. What roles do the ingredients that are not in LifePak play?

A. If you go to the Ingredients tab on any of the Total Balance product pages on the Xtend-Life website you will find detailed explanations on each ingredient, together with relevant clinical data.
